This year marks two significant milestones; firstly the 150th Anniversary of Wellington and the 15th Birthday of Westpac Stadium. To mark these occasions, Westpac Stadium in conjunction with the Wellington, Porirua and Hutt City Councils, has invited 12 schools from across the Wellington region to take part in a large scale project to enliven the internal public spaces at the Stadium.
Each school will work with one of six professional Wellington artists to create a large mural on a canvas affixed to the walls of the Stadium concourse.
The artists taking part in the project are a mixture of high profile and up and coming talent including Gabby O’Connor, Jon Drypnz, Kerry Ann Lee, Jade Townsend, Michel Tuffery and Wayne Youle.
Around 20 students from each school will undertake a creative workshop with their artist to develop their design concepts as a group before coming into the Stadium for a painting day from August. The project aims to help engage, up skill and empower young people across the region.
Said Westpac Stadium CEO Shane Harmon, “This is a great way for us to celebrate the Stadium’s birthday and recognise its significance in the local community. We are excited to provide an opportunity for youth from across the Wellington region to connect and engage with the venue in a new and creative way”.
The project has been made possible thanks to the generous sponsorship of Resene who have provided all of the paint and materials to complete the artworks.
Support has also been provided by the Wellington City Council Creative Communities Fund, Hutt City Creative Communities Fund, Go Wellington and Concept Sign and Display who have supplied the canvases.
The artworks will be on public display at all event days over the next 12 months for fans to admire. A special launch event will be held later in the year once all murals have been completed.
