Emerging Kiwi music-superstars Drax Project will make a special appearance during the T20 double-header at Westpac Stadium on Waitangi Day (Wednesday 6 February) - bringing sport and entertainment together to create a unique festival of cricket.

In their only Wellington performance this summer, the band will entertain fans between the WHITE FERNS v India and the BLACKCAPS v India T20 matches, playing a set of their chart-topping hits.

Drax Project, who began as music students busking on the streets of Wellington, have found global success with global recording deals, their own live shows and opening for international artists such as Ed Sheeran, Lorde and Camila Cabello.

The band were recognised in November 2018 winning both Breakthrough Artist of the Year and Single of the Year at the 2018 New Zealand Music Awards.

Drax Project frontman Shaan Singh said the opportunity to play at Westpac Stadium was huge for the group.

“Growing up in Wellington, playing at the Stadium has always been something we’ve really wanted to do. Most of the band are well into their cricket too, so putting the two things together should make it a quite special day for us” he said. “Being half Kiwi and half Indian, it’s the absolutely perfect match to be playing at. I’ll be claiming a win whatever happens!”

New Zealand Cricket CEO David White highlighted the unique proposition of the Waitangi Day game.

“NZC is proud to be offering double-headers featuring the WHITE FERNS and BLACKCAPS playing on the same day, in the same venue – it’s a great celebration for our sport.

“To then combine this with a quality, homegrown performance from Drax Project truly fits with where cricket is heading – sport and entertainment combining to make this a full-day festival.”

WREDA General Manager Events and Experiences Warrick Dent said the announcement would contribute to Wellington’s exciting summer line-up.

“We are very proud of Drax Project here in Wellington, being one of our most recognised local talents, so it is a great fit to have them perform at this event” said Dent. “Wellington’s summer calendar is packed full of great events and having Drax Project perform at the cricket is a great addition.”

Westpac Stadium Chief Executive Shane Harmon said the band brought a new dimension to the event.

“Wellington has already secured a great allocation of international cricket matches this summer and we are always looking at ways to enhance the experience for fans,” he said. “This performance will add a whole new level to the event experience and appeal to a wide range of sports fans, music lovers and those who just want a great day out in the sunshine.”
